If they need an excuse, it better be a valid one.  Even in a “at will” state and with you not covered by a union agreement there are written procedures in the company’s employee’s manual for termination for cause.  That is why most companies lay off rather than fire.  If your employer is looking for excuses you may want to look for another employer.

I have always seen it as if a company is looking for an excuse to terminate employment any excuse will do.
If you don't give them one then they are very lenient if they can be
