I have always seen it as if a company is looking for an excuse to terminate employment any excuse will do.
If you don't give them one then they are very lenient if they can be

Hi, I also live in California.  I'm a teacher and was surprised the first time I was called out on a school day.  I put in for personal leave (I've only used 2 in 13 years so I have plenty), but when my papers came back the district had put it down under community service and I wasn't docked pay or sick days.  I thought that was pretty cool.  A friend works for a national insurance company and they are very lenient also.  So it seems to depend on the size of the company and the ability of the company to release an employee.  I'm alwasy impressed with how much most companies want to help out in any way they can.

Hello,
In California, if you are called out, it is voluntary that you respond as it is voluntary that your employer let you off for it.  In our group, we have had a few employers that would pay their employees while they were on a SAR callout.  Those were rare.  Most of the SAR member have employers that would allow their employees to respond and miss the work without pay provided they could get by without them.  Many of our members are self employed and will respond at the drop of a hat.  We had one that would quit his job when we would call him out and find another after the callout was over.  There are no laws in California mandating employers let you respond for a SAR callout as they are with the National Guard or military reserves.

Hey Group!
In starting our new MSAR, we have yet another question that maybe some of you have experienced, and, hopefully, many of you can give us some insight on.
Are there any federal, or some state, regulations on job security or policy when a MSAR or SAR group is called out? Does your employer a) have to let you go, b) let you go with pay, c) can they fire you, d) do you have to take it as vacation, etc.?
In trying to recruit, this is a question that has come up, and I'm sure it has come up for others also. One prospective member asked if this was like the National Guard and they had to let you go to a call with no recriminations on your job. What's the general consensus out there?
We realize that this may differ from state to state, but would like some input. Can you help us out??
BTW, Irv, want to thank you for the CD - it contains a wealth of info. Thanks
