Want to thank everyone for their input. Found out last night
from one of the top "dogs" in the Iowa K9 SAR that Iowa is an "Employer at Will"
state, which simply stated means that the employer is holding the reins - he can
do what he wants. Essentially, if your employer doesn't like the shoes you're
wearing today, he can fire you - of course, he has to find a legitimate reason,
i.e. poor job performance, etc., but there are no regulations protecting your
job.
However, most employers, especially in
small towns, which are prolific in Iowa, the "peer pressure" and coffee shop
talk, keeps them somewhat in line, in that they tend to look at SAR work (or
volunteer fire, etc.) as community service. Thus, in Iowa, your job security
with a MSAR call depends on a good relationship with your employer. As a good
measure, it is strongly suggested that an employee interested or involved with
SAR, discuss the matter with their employer prior to being called out in order
to get protocol set in advance.
Thanks for all your help!
