Our MCMSAR standards also prohibit stallions. But I believe we are a bit
too new to this business to take too strong a stand.

I personally have been on trail rides where stallions were present, and I
didn't even realize it until well into the ride. Most of the riders were
experienced in handling their stallions in a variety of situations. Many
stallions are better behaved, more talented, and better trained than the
geldings/mares. I enjoy being around the stallions, and am always
interested in seeing their manners.

So, I think the real issue surrounds the owners of the mares who
unexpectedly face problems with their mounts. They may not have ever had to
get their distracted, cycling, mare back on focus, especially in the middle
of a crisis situation.

Maybe SAR teams should stick to all geldings? (I admit to stirring the pot
here...LOL)
Perhaps it depends on each team, the mix of mounts, and the willingness of
each member to work and drill together.
Do most MSAR teams divide mounted members into groups of 2 or 3 anyway,
drilling experience in working/riding together?
I would consider the odds of the team serving in a mutual aid situation with
other mounted teams.

Sue

p.s. I ride a mare...so please disregard the "gelding only" crack. :-)
