Chris, could you elaborate on this? What specific major risks
do you take on SAR missions?

Those tips are pretty thin. Let's see...first, it depends very
much *where* you are a SAR volunteer. In New Mexico, fuel receipts
are 100% reimbursable from the state, and the state also provides
SAR volunteers with liability and medical insurance not only while
on missions but also en route to and from the mission location.
Some New Mexico SAR volunteers decline to get reimbursed for their
gas/diesel, but I think this is a mistake. The fuel reimbursement
fund is not a zero-sum fund; the more it pays out, the larger it
grows. This is a significant issue for New Mexico MSAR volunteers,
because of our big rigs and the distances we travel to a search;
my fuel expenses run $50-$100 per mission. Many larger employers
will pay the employee's salary while the employee on SAR missions,
but as a rule you must arrange in advance for this and you may need
to do some research to find out if this option is available to you.
If these sources of support exist, but you do not claim them, then
I don't know if the IRS would allow you to deduct the expenses; for
this you should consult a tax attorney or CPA who has *experience*
specific to volunteering. I cannot stress enough the importance of
experience here!

Another point is that (I think) you can deduct volunteer expenses
on your federal tax return only if you itemize deductions. But if
you itemize, you lose the standard deduction, so there is no point
to itemizing unless your deductions add up to over whatever the
standard deduction is now ($7000?). People who don't carry a big
house mortgage are generally out of luck here.

A more complex point concerns large charitable donations to SAR
units, donations which often come from SAR volunteers themselves.
It is my impression that many SAR units are not handling donations
legally, which puts their donors at risk in the event of an audit
of either party. The IRS website has an entire section devoted to
charities, but many states also have strict rules that apply, so
*beware*.

I have one of those visors for my swiftwater helmet, too, and have worn a
ballcap under that helmet. Since I wear glasses having a visor of some kind
helps keep the spray off the lenses. But that is insufficient brim (for me)
if I'm going to be out all day.

We have Swiftwater Safety and Fundamental Rescue Methods on the calendar for
countywide SAR training in April in conjunction with the SWR refresher
training just prior to Memorial Day weekend, when we position teams in the
typical "someone in the water needs help" river areas. We have the Kern
River and Kaweah River in our county, along with some smaller rivers, open
aqueducts and large irrigation canals. I have a 10 minute response from home
to the closest cluster of problem areas on the Kaweah just above the dam.
But that is in the process of changing - they're raising the height of the
dam and the entire look of the Kaweah feeding the reservoir will change.

How many groundpounders do you know who would *want* to hike for miles in
oilskin full length dusters? ;)

A wide brim hat can come in handy for groundpounders doing man tracking -
sometimes blocking a sun angle can make things more visible. A friend of
mine who is the lead man tracker in his county, an instructor, etc., wears a
fedora.

Rule 1 in SAR is personal safety. What kind of high risk riding are you
doing?
