I'm also very interested in any information regarding sources for safety vests with multiple pockets (preferably a lightweight breathable version since we can have extreme
summer heat locally), orange saddlebags / cantle bags / horn bags, fanny packs / lumbar packs, etc. (Barbara, could you provide me with information for your safety
vests?) Web site links would be preferred, but if not available at least having supplier contact info would help me wade through the research of various options.
I am also interested in sources for vests. We are in the process of revamping our uniform. It is imperative that we have a vest instead of our current shirts (which can be covered up by layers!). As those of you in mountainous areas know the temps we operate in can vary as much as 30 or 40 degrees in one days time. We are following the SAR recommendations to layer our clothing but that often leaves our uniform shirt hidden. I have tried working with a bright orange plastic woven Sheriff's emergency vest but am not satisfied with the outcome. (too stiff, too unwieldy) Definitely need cloth of some kind.
Also - how many of you have equipment weight restrictions, and what are those weight limits?
We have discussed this but have decided not to inact a weight restriction at this time. The only one that makes sense to us is a percentage of a horse's weight and that is too difficult to enforce. My gelding is a solid 14'3 guy but my friends horse is a solid 16'2! He can carry a lot more weight than I can. Instead we try to do a lot of education about appropriate weight and packing options. And when we distribute the group supplies those with bigger horses take heavier stuff. It works for us. We also maintain a pretty friendly and cooperative atmosphere so that no one would hesitate to discuss the issue with someone who looked to be overloading their mount! <G>
