Some people are going to laugh. As has already been mentioned, making it hard early on helps, and it depends on how many deer and how much there is to eat.

I have a mixture of "woven" wire field fence, welded 4"x2" (3-5ft tall, depending on what I had when installing that part), and 8' tall "elk fence" in the farthest corner. Above the short fencing I put a strand of baling twine every 8" or so up to 7 or 8 feet. I found that they wanted to jump through just under the lowest twine, so I put an electric wire right there just warm enough to tickle their nose when they nosed up to hop through there.
My wife and I had a blast watching it work the first night we turned it on with a full moon. All six had to try it once, then they walked up the road between the garden and the house and went somewhere else.

They sometimes still get in if I am not diligent about something. I chased a few out earlier this season. One panicked and went over the elk fence instead of finding where he came in. He didn't get his hind leg all the way over, and so had a hard landing, but got up and ran away.
