Our family has gotten great mileage and foot protection with the Muck brand of farm boots. Waterproof, quick-drying, and VERY well made.

I think part of the problem is that what suits one person may not suit others. I have a pair of Muck shoes, which I do use some of the time; but they don't fit me well -- too narrow in the toes; and don't seem to me to breathe as well as advertised, so between the two my feet start feeling cramped and sealed in, and I don't find them comfortable for long term wear. They also have less support than full scale lace up boots or shoes.

I am, however, very hard to fit: I have a relatively short wide foot, with wide toes (my toes don't taper) and only a medium width heel. Many years ago Red Wing used to make boots that fit me very well, but the company was sold, and now theirs are all too wide in the heel for me if they're wide enough in the toe. (Wide toe and narrower heel is called "combination last", and feet like that are common enough that shoemakers used to make some styles like that; but apparently it's cheaper to make all the shoes the same shape, even if the feet aren't all the same shape).
