Man, that's hard to believe. Cold water within 10 minutes.
Great tip.

The guy who has land next to me back in Arkansas told an
even wilder story about poison ivy.

A couple decades back he was living in the Ozark hills and
getting poison ivy rashes real bad. He came across an elderly
mountain lady who explained how the locals took care of it.

You "eat" some tiny, young poison ivy leaves when they first
bud out in the spring.

It acts like an immunization.

This brave dude tried it..... and it worked!!

He never gets poison ivy rashes after working around it,
even using a weed eater to mow down a thick patch.

.... imo, Calagel (from Tecnu folks) is the best ointment

I have gotten severe cases of PI more times than I care to recall. About ten years ago a doctor friend gave me a sheet of paper with some VERY valuable info on it from a med journal.
It stated that the worst thing you can do when you have made contact with PI is wash it with warm water. Warm water spreads the oil without destroying it's punch. COLD water will neutralize the poison. No soap, no problem. I found this hard to believe. I tested it with a quick rinse after I had come in contact and some of the oil rinsed between my fingers and I still got the curse. Later,Ireally wanting this to work I pulled a bunch of PI vines out of the ground barehanded and very thouroughly rinsed my hands (including between my fingers) and got no reaction. Period. I have used this approach many many times over the years now. IT WORKS. I never use soap or worry about PI if I can get to cold water within about ten minutes. The article stated about ten minutes as the time limit. I still get a bad reaction when I inadvertently come in contact with the dreaded plant and fail to know it. Today I pull PI plants bare handed and it has become easy to maintain. Hard to believe but true. Todd Lister
