Best thing I've found for controlling the little rascals is pressure between thumb and forefinger. My wife likes the cup of soapy water approach. Both take too much time but I win every year. They fade after a few weeks.Gets old after 300 bed feet or so.

I bought a gas-powered combination leaf blower/vacuum a few years ago to attempt to control CPB on eggplant, and found it pretty useless. The vacuum wasn’t strong enough to suck up the bugs – they usually dropped off the plant and disappeared into the soil as the vacuum approached. Maybe a stronger vacuum would work – I’m not sure.
What I’ve been meaning to try is a design I saw a few years ago where someone had mounted a furnace fan on a walk-behind snowblower, then attached a screened box to an arm that extended out to one side. The idea was to drive the snowblower down between the rows of potatoes, with the arm extending over the row, and the box hanging down the opposite side to catch the bugs blown off the plants. The inventor claimed it worked great, but I’ve never seen it in action.

Does anyone have any experience using a shredder vacuum to control colorado potato beetles? I heard about this at an organic conference and it sounded interesting. Any thing to consider before buying one? Thanks,
Jen
