I've always wondered about guinea fowl in the garden, I raise chickens and would never let them in my growing area, just too destructive with their scratching. I've had guineas before, and they are loud and they loved to roost on my deck, what a mess! They didn't go inside at night like normal chickens. I'm not sure they are worth the hassle, although some people love them.

I'll leave it to others to comment on the efficacy of guinea fowl. I hope they also comment on how useful they are in the market.

But regarding cucumber beetle, one of the problems that must be solved is the fact that they carry a bacterium in their gut that causes bacterial wilt in cucumbers and melons. This disease is impossible to cure once the plants are infected, so it is critical to prevent the insect from infesting the plants. It may not be possible for guinea fowl to remove the beetles fast enough from those crops to prevent the disease.

Does anyone have experience with guinea fowl as consumers of various
pests in the garden? Cucumber, squash and asparagus beetles have been
a significant problem in our gardens this past season. Do guinea fowl
significantly reduce the pest populations? Do guineas have their own
problems -- such as damaging some or all crops, etc? Many thanks for
any advise that may be offered. Tom (central NC, zone 7)
