Bill I have found that if you want a good summer mix start working asian style greens into your mix. I've had a wonderful experience with Mizuna this year. It also does fantastic as a micro green with a germination time of about 3 to 5 days. Its super warm weather hardy. Down here in Cincinnati we have a horrible time with summer salad mixes and the mizuna held up like a champ. In the summer we focus on dill, mizuna, pac choi, mustards, and arugula. It seems to work well and the restaurants that we are selling to that want greens in the dead heat of summer appreciate the option and pay a premium. We've also started using the board method where you do single rows with boards about 2 to 4" above the ground (we use bricks). I just one-bys that mill myself about 16' long. Type of wood does not matter. Saturate watering then place board right after sowing seeds. Evaporation and shading from the board will help germination along when you need soil temps under 75, even if its 90 out. Our first attempts involved direct contact with the board to to soil which does not work well. I have not tried it yet but I would think that 75% shade cloth would do the trick as well.
