Scott,
The New Ag Network published an article last year about managing canada
thistle. See <http://www.ipm.msu.edu/new-ag/issues08/8-27.htm#2>
They report on the use of sudangrass as a summer cover crop to suppress
thistle growth. The following year the field had much less (90% less) canada
thistle. There is also a good summary of thistle biology.

Subject: [Market-farming] organic thistle control
We have one field with a tremendous thistle problem and low
organic matter.
I applied heavy amounts of compost this week based on the weeds
denote imbalance principle.
We also have a spader that can till 10 inches deep.
Any suggestions for strategy? Thanks,
Scott
