We purchased the cool-bot last yr for cut flowers and I love it. Our room isn't even insulated very well yet :( and it kept things in the 40's during really hot weather. Hope we can build an insulated building and run it there soon.
Also you definitely need to get a new air conditioner like they say. Do what they tell you and it will work like a dream.

And what I've read in an herb supplier catalogue is that the seed needs
light to germinate-- so cover very lightly, if at all-- just press the seed
into the soil mix.

This isn't a new thing here in Oklahoma. To sell any of those items at a farmers market or anywhere else, they have to be from a licensed, certified kitchen. Yes, it is very expensive. Out of 50 members at our market we have 3 with a certified kitchen.
Until I joined this list I thought the rules were the same everywhere. It's amazing to me how different things are from state to state.

Has anyone tried one of these and did it work? We've got an old large
walk-in cooler that though it no longer works, we want to retrofit with a
room ac unit, and this "gizmo" sounds perfect.

In Wyoming we need a certified kitchen for salsas and breads. Jellies and pickles require a pressurized unit that is way beyond most folks budgets. We can use certified kitchens at day cares, churches, Elk/Moose lodges or little restaurants who have a day off. You might see if that works where you are. As to eggs, they aren't considered hazardous. You do have to sell them in a plain container that says 'ranch eggs, ungraded'.

I was wondering how far any of you drive to vend at your favorite market? Either in miles or time, I know they are not the same :-)

Liz, we look at those some time ago. But my thoughts were I could not take the chance. I could not find any one that had used it. So I just bit the bullet and bought a new system for our cooler. At times we have several thousand dollars in produce stored. I wish I knew for sure. Interesting.

I just spoke to a grower across town from me who has one and loves it. She
said the only trouble she had was when her hubbie ignored the advice not to
run an old A/C unit on it instead of getting a new one. As soon as he caved
in it worked well. They drop the temps to the low 40s.

Liz,
We bought one 3 years ago. We had a building built, 10'X12' and insulated extremely well. Use a room AC, and the coolbot. We can keep our building down to 38 with no problems at all, and that is during the heat of summer. We have many days of temps over 100 and this thing just keeps going.
This thing is amazing. As mentioned we've had ours for several years with no problems at all.
We had looked for several years for a used walk in cooler that was affordable. No luck. We saw this mentioned in Growing for Market and decided it was worth a chance.
I'm so glad we did. We used no cooling, old refrigerators, etc... anything to keep produce cool, and of course we had losses. Now, we have virtually no losses at all.
If you already have a cooler and can rig this up to work, you are already money ahead.
Carla
Perkins, OK Forget the 10" of snow. Now we are supposed to have ice!
