Since posting the question I remembered to check http://www.nevegetable.org/ and found they reccomend broadcasting 20lbs of Borax per acre, so the 2 - 4 TBS sounds about right, I shall
start with 2 in a sprinkler can and see what happens.

I've used the "calibrated finger" approach and it seems to work ok -- I would guess that I use about 2-4 Tbs on a 75 foot row.
