This sounds weird but it works well. Take a gallon ice cream bucket and mix about a cup of oatmeal with about 2 cups of vegetable oil. Add enough water to fill the bucket 1/2 full and add a ramp of some sort. I catch many mice in the greenhouse and the barn this way. It is harmless to the other animals and cheap to make.

I tried the sticky traps too, and they worked great. Only problem is that
the mice are not necessarily dead when the trap is retrieved. I've heard
people say they smack them against a wall to kill them...a little too
violent for my taste. I ended up drowning them (any less violent?), but
after that experience, I determined to go back to the more "humane" traps
that kill the mice instantly. It was just easier on my conscience that way.

There are some traps that are extremely sticky that when they walk on
these
they stick onto them. These have worked great for me when I have had
problems. I have had a cat get its paws stuck in one too and that was not
fun.
