This idea that childhood is a special time, for play, etc., is an odd one in
our human existance.

In most cultures throughout time and place, being a child included
involvement in some basic activities that helped to sustain the community.

I think it important for children to feel an integral part of their
community - and capable of making contributions to it.

This is in stark contrast to our consumer oriented culure, where children's
wants and pleasures are the focus, rather than the well-being of the
community.

I haven't read anything here saying children are being forced to work. If
they want to work should they be told no?
