De tasseling corn is used in the breeding of hybrid corn where you want to prevent self pollination of one of the varieties in the crossing process but is in no way needed in producing market sweet corn. Some folks detassel sweetcorn just before harvest to make it easier for workers to work in the rows without getting cut up from the leaves... Bob.

hi joe-i am  in gilbert- be glad to chat about farming! also- does anyone know what the point of de-tasseling corn is?  i tried to find some info yesterday and i am still "cornfused".  my niece said when she was in nebraska one summer, all the teenagers there had summer jobs de-tasseling corn.  now i guess a lot of it is done by machine.  we grow lots of field corn and sweet corn here and i had never heard of it.thanks, lauren
