Removing female asparagus plants prevents asparagus seed from littering the
soil in the planting. It can subsequently develop into plants which compete
with the original planting. That's why the commercial asparagus industry
considers it's worst weed to be asparagus. It's also the reason research was
done to develop all-male hybrid varieties. They don't produce seed, hence,
no asparagus seedlings turning into weeds. The all-male hybrids come from
the Rutgers breeding program and have Jersey in the name, such as Jersey
Giant, Jersey Prince, Jersey Knight.... but no Jersey Queen.
