Marie,

Actually my grandfather showed me how to do this. There's also a good
article in Mother Earth News relating to pumpkins in the corn, but works
well for squashes also:
http://www.motherearthnews.com/menarch/archive/issues/107/107-024-01.htm is
the link to it. In the past I've just removed 4 young corn plants, about
every six feet, and built up a small mound in that space, planted the squash
there and let it grow. Usually added some manure in the bottom of the mound.
Skip every other row and stagger the mounds. I tried this once with
cucumbers. They climbed all over the corn and produced well, but it was a
pain picking them as often as needed. It really works better for single
harvest crops. If you mulch the rows, rather than post-plant cultivate, I
bet you can plant them anywhere without hurting either crop. I usually have
to do a couple of shallow passes with the rototiller until the weeds can't
compete, so putting them in the rows is the best option. This process
doesn't work as well with the huge Hubbard squashes and giant pumpkins, but
acorns, buttercups, butternuts, and small Hubbards work very well. And it
sure frees up space. Good luck.

Jeff

When you plant pumpkins and squash in the corn, do you put it in the row
with the corn or between the rows? What is the spacing for the
squashes? Where can I find more about this?
