This got me curious so I Googled and found:

It mentions that sunflowers 'suppress weeds', but it's kind
of vague about them - doesn't exactly specify that they
contain any juglones. But it looks like they contain
*something* that inhibits other plants - I've noticed the
bare ground under bird feeders too.
I also found this - off the subject, really, but very
interesting, I thought - how some Indian tribes planted the
'Three Sisters' with sunflowers along the north side of the
garden, so they wouldn't shade the other plants, as well as
companion planting info.
