This may not have any bearing on the subject at all but I have noticed
why things don't grow under my bird feeders is all the birds (sometimes
I have 40 +) and squirrels walking under feeder to get fallen seeds.
Ever so often I turn the ground underneath the feeders and have been
able to grow flowers with the exception they get trampled. Here in
Georgia they grow fields of them to attract the doves for their annual
dove shoot.

This got me curious so I Googled and found:
http://www.ext.vt.edu/departments/envirohort/factsheets2/landsnurs/apr94
pr1.html
It mentions that sunflowers 'suppress weeds', but it's kind
of vague about them - doesn't exactly specify that they
contain any juglones. But it looks like they contain
*something* that inhibits other plants - I've noticed the
bare ground under bird feeders too.
I also found this - off the subject, really, but very
interesting, I thought - how some Indian tribes planted the
'Three Sisters' with sunflowers along the north side of the
garden, so they wouldn't shade the other plants, as well as
companion planting info.
