Regarding the pesticide effects of using tobacco, I
would like to point out that other members of the
solanum family also have insecticidal properties, yet
we still eat tomatoes, potatoes, peppers and
eggplants. Crucifers also contain compounds toxic to
insects that are not adapted to detoxify them, yet we
gleefully ingest massive quantities of broccoli,
cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, mustard
greens, turnips, etc. Black Leaf 40 (nicotine
sulfate) was chemically concentrated and no way
representative of what is present in tobacco. I
suspect tobacco dust in not allowed in certified
organic programs merely because it is not politically
correct to do so.

About fertilizing tobacco, at least burley, ammonium
nitrate is an acceptable form of nitrogen for
conventional tobacco. The only time ammonia is a
problem is if the pH is too low, which use creates
even lower pH and causes potential for manganese
toxicity. Too much nitrogen in any form is not
acceptable. To further take this thread into OT
regions, the only unacceptable fertilizer formulation
that I'm aware of is using muriate of potash in the
spring, which causes an excess of chloride (because
muriate of potash is composed highly of KCl, not just
K2O).
