Pam, I wish I had good news to offer, but the 13,000 acres of sweet potatoes
grown in Northeast Mississippi were a 60 percent loss -- 40 percent never
harvested, another 20 percent rotting post-harvest because of excess
moisture content -- because of the incredible fall rains we've had.

As for the biological technicalities, the only suggestion I have is to
contact Dr. Bill Burdine, our area sweet potato specialist, at
bburdine AT ext.msstate.edu. Since he's a state employee, he may not be able to
deal with an out-of-state grower, but try it. If it doesn't work, e-mail me
off-list and I'll contact him for you.

We've had a lot of rain recently, and have been digging our sweet potatoes
out of the mud. Some of them started to grow white mold while we were tryint
to cure them. Some of the moldy ones are starting to go squishy from the
surface in. When you cut them open, there's a thin purple/black line or
layer about 1/4" under the skin. What is it? What can we do? Did the purple
line cause the mold or vice versa??
