Oh, Jeanine, I laughed so hard when I read your email! Tell your daughter you aren't stupid at all, you just honor tradition! Maybe you've heard the story about the lady who always cut a bit off the ham before she put it in the pan to bake? Finally, her husband asked her why she did that, and she said that was how her mother and her grandmother before her did it, but she didn't know why. She got curious about this and went to her grandmother and asked her why she always cut a bit off the end of the ham before she put it in the oven. Her grandmother told her it was because she hadn't owned a pan big enough to put the whole ham in it! :-)
Take care,
Marj
