Greetings Dave:

Types of fertilizer:

A. Has three numbers - Example- 5-10-5 (percentages)

1st# = Nitrogen - growth and green leaves
2nd# = Phosphorus - roots
3rd# = Potassium or potash - balance between the two others
IF 4th# - most often represents sulfur

B. Organic - non-burning

C. Rapid grow - for transplanting

D. Use whatever fits your needs

Example: Blood meal - 6-0-0 = 6% nitorgen and you pay approx. $7.79 for
1/4 lb N, not a good deal (grass clippings = nitrogen!) 20-21-20 = 1 to 1
(nothing special).

Test for soil composition, most plants require neutral to acid soil.
Annuals require more nitrogen (12-12-12/2lbs per 100 ft, don't work soil as
deep, up to 7"). Perrennials (6.2-6.7 pH = 2lbs 2-5-10 per 100 ft.)and
best to work fertilizer into bed to be planted the year before planting,
work 1 foot or deeper. Rooted plants - add phosphorus to build roots
first. If using alot of compost, don't fertilize, plant will only grow
tall and fall over. Fertilize after August, if needed and use 5-10-5.

Good luck with the numbers.

Blessings x 2,
Ava
