I thought I'd fill 8 cold frames with cold-weather

I read about some people who built a 20' x40' perimeter of straw or hay
bales, filled it with wood chippings and other composting materials and
then built a PVC hop structure over it. As the materials composted they
generated sufficient heat to warm the hoop structure for growing
throughout the winter without any supplemental heat source. Perhaps a
similar approach could be used for cold frames. Build the perimeter with
bales, fill with compost materials, cover with a couple of inches of good
soil and direct seed or simply place seed flats on top of the compost
materials. Then cover the perimter as you would any other cold frame.
