Hello,
I'm a new farmer starting out on 1/4 acre in an area that gets late-Spring
snow storms, and my question is how to use eight 3' X 7' cold frames instead
of a greenhouse to start alot of vegetables in. I'm planning to plant my
vegetables in succession to have a steady supply at a farmers' market from
late-May thru September. I thought I'd fill 8 cold frames with cold-weather
crops, then remove the frames as these crops get their true leaves, and move
the frames to a new area and plant the next succession crop. My soil temp
outdoors is now 44 degrees, so I could seed outdoors, but I'm expecting snow
storms to dump snow in my area until mid-May. The snow melts completely in
2-3 days, but it snows every 7-12 days. Does anyone have experience with
late snows and 1) knowing what would survive if seeded outdoors now or 2)
leap-frogging the cold frames as I've mentioned?
Thanks, Dee Casey
