I've had a couple of people ask me off-list what APS systems are, I'm
answering onlist.

APS systems are styrofoam blocks with varying # of cells in them. The
cells are open at the bottom and set up on a styrofoam block with pegs
matching each of the cells. You put the pegs down to make a raised
platform, there is capillary matting on top of that, then on top of that
you put the cell block. Fill each cell with growing media. The whole
unit now sits in a well, the capillary matting dangles into that well.
You put water in the well, ouila, your plants are automatically
watered. When you're ready to plant, turn the pegged platform over and
use the pegs to help pop out the rooted soil blocks.

Gardener's Supply carries them and I'm pretty sure I saw them some place
else for less money but can't remember where right now. In fact, if
anyone has alternative suppliers for APS systems or the equivalent
and/or capillary matting, I'd like to know. I have to replace all mine
as they were smashed in the last move but one.

Other than when movers smash them, they last virtually forever. I never
sterilized them and never had a disease problem.
