I am having no trouble with either tomatoes or onions. That said, saving seeds in this wet and cold country I live in (Ireland) can always be tricky and a green house to dry seeds at the right moment or to germinate them under controlled circumstances is often necessary.
I start most all seeds in trays with 35-77-96 or 150 individual cells and I use only my own compost. Outside germination can lead to serious trouble from slugs and other pests or just from the fact that vegetable seeds take so much longer than weed seeds to come up.

Why not; if it gets more people gardening who otherwise assumed it was
too much work...? There's nothing wrong with raised beds, and organic
fertilizers are encouraged. But I do think the statement that tomatoes
are tricky to make your own transplants from seed is nonsense--they are
easier than most other veggies, I find. I'm having wicked trouble with
onions from seed!
