You can still get machines to spread manure in the US--many Amish farmers pull them behind their horses, and they're also available to pull behind tractors. There is even a smaller model that can be pulled with a yard tractor or ATV.

That cow poop comes out of anaerobic tanks Liz. Our government in Ireland has been pushing us in that direction as well because it is more efficient. Meaning you need big machines to manipulate that liquid slurry.
Our cow manure does not stink at all, NOT AT ALL, we pike it out of a stable into a wheelbarrow and spread it by hand since it is almost completely solid. There used to be machines to spread this stuff but I have not seen one for years.
If the tractors should stop because of rising oil prices there is no way to use that slurry. One can always work and use the not smelly solids.
