I heard an interesting interview on Sunday, with the author of "Kosher Nation," Sue Fishkoff. Her remarks about why more and more Americans seek out kosher-certified food were eye-opening and encouraging. Apparently many people believe kosher food is more "pure" (which doesn't necessarily mean it's better for you--Honey Nut Cheerios are kosher, for pete's sake). She spoke of factories in China that are overseen by kosher inspectors, and the work necessary to clean a US factory after non-kosher food was processed, in order to make it acceptable for a run of kosher food.
I don't think buying kosher food is any guarantee of food safety, because it doesn't protect you against GMO foods or added chemicals. And it doesn't provide any incentive for buying local. But I was encouraged to hear that Americans in general are giving any weight to the notion of "pure." Maybe we are grinding slowly but inevitably toward a better understanding of nutrition and food safety. I want to think so, anyway.

No, seriously, long as they don't care if they poison their kids and the corporations promote it and the law allows it, I can't stop them and won't try. But if someone shows an interest in the problem I like to encourage them to learn more. Today we conversed with other customers in the Vitamin Cottage and I had a good exchange with a lady at AAA auto ins.

The correct reply to them would be like, of course you're not elitist,
you're eating out of the garbage can, and if you cared about your children
you'd do the research and find out the truth. You're poisoning your
children.

The
only thing that will bring us there is for this to be repeated over and
over
and over on the mainstream news, morning and night, and we can all
how soon that's likely to happen.you
Recently one of the meterologists on the Weather Channel asked people on
her
Facebook page to tell her what cereal they liked best. Out of the hundred
and some responses, I think only two people mentioned oatmeal. For
everyone
else it was Captain Crunch, Count Chocula, Raisin Bran, Cheerios, etc.,
etc.
These are relatively well-educated people, and they had no clue? Heaven
help
the rest of the general population.
Sigh, I feel so negative about this. But every time I ask someone, "Do
actually know what's in that?" I get answers like, "Oh, I'm not one of
those
elitist foodies! I eat what tastes good." Or "Maybe it's not perfect, but
I
can't afford organic." Or my all time favorite: "It must be okay or the
government wouldn't let them sell it."
But keep posting quotes like this--makes me feel better to know that
someone
is paying attention.

Similar to Winona's lecture, Ikerd sums it all up for me. See his
mountains
of papers at the other link there.
