OSU has been doing a study on the spread of infectious e-coli via European
starlings. They show up during feeding time for cows, and also eat the
undigested feed from cow manure. The same strains of e-coli have been found
in their digestive tracts. I would be interested to know if starlings are
present out west, and if they are studied as possible vectors there. It
would make a whole lot more sense than feral hogs.

Another good reason to patronize people who raise beef or dairy cattle on grass. Or do it yourself if you can.

There is a growing demand for grass-fed beef. The man I get my milk from told me he was completely out of ground beef--someone had driven from 300 miles away to buy all he had. Most of us aren't going to do that for our own consumption, but there is a growing trend toward co-operative efforts. One person makes the drive to purchase meat or wheat or milk or whatever for a group of people. There are several organized co-ops doing this just in Virginia and several unofficial ones.
