This was my first reaction too when I learned about cloth wipes. What's the point when you could just use water? But if you're using a sawdust or composting toilet, that extra water may be undesirable. And unfortunately there is an even greater squick factor for a lot of westerners in using their hand to wipe, regardless of how well it's washed afterward. We're such prudes :-(
