Actually - it doesnt matter if it is starlings or hogs. The fact remains that it is the feedlot cows that are the vector because only the acid rumen can support H-157 ecoli. If the cows are grazing and having a low/no grain diet there will be no h--157 for the starlings and hogs to spread and for the hospital folks to misdiagnose and give the damaging antibiotics.

OSU has been doing a study on the spread of infectious e-coli via European
starlings. They show up during feeding time for cows, and also eat the
undigested feed from cow manure. The same strains of e-coli have been found
in their digestive tracts. I would be interested to know if starlings are
present out west, and if they are studied as possible vectors there. It
would make a whole lot more sense than feral hogs.
