Paul that is why I used the  'disclaimer'  "It is my understanding,... "
Nature handles things the best way-- and  the recent demands in local markets for "organic"  is proof positive, that even the city folk are catching on to the fact that 'conventional' is not the best way to go. The  legal definition of 'organic' is whitewashed and diluted--and certification is something of a joke, as far as I am concerned.  I am buying the hay for my rabbits from a farm that I  know-- I am getting their grains from sources I can trust. My market garden is planted in 'heritage' foods, and they are marketed locally, through a farm group I belong to-- our market demand far exceeds  what  nearly 100 memebers can supply.  We are even looking into building our own storage wharehouse ( we each deliver to a central location for  pickuyp and transport to our buyers) Then, to top it off, I introduced the idea of a MPU, and now, with the increase in demand for rabbit, we may very well build a USDA inspected facility for our own poultry and rabbits... Note, as a group, it was decided several years afgo, not to use 'organic' in our literature, simply because it is now so undefined in its application...

Thanks Paul,
You put that really well.  One of the reasons e coli is so prevelant is because we, as a society are too clean.  Children that are never exposed to any "nasties" never develop a immunity to them.

I have to quarrel with the whole business of composting to make anything "safe". It's just not an exact science and no one can kill all pathogens or decompose all toxins by composting at any level. Healthy soil is not sterile nor free of pathogens. What healthy soil does is favor beneficial microorganisms over the bad guys and produce healthy plants and produce. YMMV.
