Native Americans introduced the Southerners to corn, pumpkins, squash,
beans and sassafras, as well as many types of wild berries and game.

I strongly suspect those extension agents base their opinion on large
acreage of commercial varieties of standard supermarket fare, grown on
depleted land for decades or longer. Of course they can't survive without
chemical drenches. More likely they don't believe crops can be grown
organically anywhere. It's like small local operations on fertile soil
don't even exist, or that's not important enough to bother mentioning.
