I've noticed that as well. I have a question - are you seeing a
decline in the common grass snake? They use to be really common in
this area, but in the last 10 years or so I doubt I've seen 5 of them.
I saw 1 this spring, but that was the first one I've seen in several
years . . . I kinda miss them. They are such pretty little things.

This is a really good answer. When we moved out here 20 year ago, we
were infested with huge Norwegian rats. We both worked at a zoo so we
brought home every rat snake that the public brought in (if it was
still alive) to be identified, unless they were willing to take it
back and turn it loose. That almost never happened! The people who
live here before us were snake phobic. As soon as we reestablished a
healthy rat snake population, the rats disappeared.
