How can I visually identify humus in my garden, compost piles or wooded area? I thought it was that rich black looking stuff after compost breaks down. I'm not so sure now.

Paul,

I guess the confusion may also be in the term synthesizing.  At Soil Secrets, the making of humus involves a biochemical chain of events using a calorie source - Protein, bacteria and other catalysts.  End result is we can manufacture hundreds if not thousands of tons of Humus per hour with the only limiting factors being demand and a quality source of Protein.
