Oh neat about the newcomers!

Your idea is my attitude too. I started the rye in late December because I was just too busy in the fall but I figure some is better than nothing. I edge all of the raised beds and flower beds and the paths with rye (perimeters get about 12 inches wide of rye). Over the winter this competes with the wiregrass. Its makes staying on top of the wiregrass easier. After the rye is cut for composing, I do buckwheat. It gets trodden on and mashed in the paths but still it kicks out enough competing roots to help keep the weeds at bay. Sometimes I shovel out the paths back down to the clay and use all the lovely loam resulting from the cover crops; I use it in other areas of the garden and start again.

The buckwheat, in case it helps someone, also comes from the health food store. I must buy a good deal of it but the feed store doesn't sell it and I can't afford shipping from Peaceful Valley (or similar).

Laura,
I'm in northeastern Oklahoma--zone 6 on the cusp of zone 7. It's actually
late to plant oats here too but I think I can get enough growth from them
even this late to add enough organic matter to the soil and provide enough
grass competition to make the effort worthwhile. Since I have livestock
that eat whole oats, there's no problem with having extra oats setting
around. In fact, just came from the barn where my Alpine doe presented me
with two new little mouths to feed--well, she'll take care of it for awhile.
:-)

Claudia
