Hello Biz;

No Chestnut Crab (nutty & fruity flavours!!) here that I am aware of, so if you have a scion or two of this, that would be a great addition... and the 'Rescue Scugog' was on a list from Siloam's... perhaps I read it wrong??

Any idea how I would get some of my farm-indigenous apple/crab trees identified?

Cheers
Scott

Hello Bizmark,
You're right, rootstocks are at a premium. I was scanning the various sources last fall. I then went back to Bill Walsh; he too was having some difficulty. At the 11th hour, he found a source in the states that would meet the various regulations and he placed an order. He said he could supply the limited quantity I was after. I assume they will be coming sometime in the future. I was searching for the email in which he stated what he was getting - but alas - 'tis gone. I believe there were rootstocks for both pears (quince and something else) and apples (definitely Bud 9 and ???).
I don't know what surplus he has - if any. When I was after Pixie Crunch, he referred me to you as a possible source, so I am sure you are aware of him as a contact.
Thanks again for the scions; whatever you have is appreciated.
jb

From: biz.storms@sympatico.ca

Who have you managed to secure Bud 9 from? Traas Rootstock out in BC retired, so it has been very slim pickings from what I hear. _________________________________________________________________

Good morning to all.

Please excuse the mass email, but it just seemed logical and easier. I have
also added a few questions to the group at the bottom.

For Joe C - I can certainly include an extra stick of Ashmead's in Joe's
package. It will go out in the next week or two.

For Scott - I will be back up at the farm this weekend to gather wood and
will have a look at: Kerr Crab, Dolgo Crab, Moscow Pear, Macoun, and Scugog.
I wonder if your reference to Rescue Scugog on the same line is a typing
error or if there is a Rescue Scugog that's new. I do have a Scugog, but not
a Rescue, since it was trounced by the deer. I can guarantee that the
Ashmead's has enough scionwood to fill many requests. Do you have any
Chestnut Crab in your collection? It has grown very well for me in Zone 4,
has been almost trouble-free for scab and mildew, and has a wonderful
sprightly, yet almost rich taste. It also bloomed and fruited like a bandit
the past two years. I sampled a few in Michigan last September, and they
were about 2 1/2" in diameter, and were crunchy and crisp with a slightly
fruit/nutty flavour. I could have eaten twenty instead of just the three.
Mine were smaller than his, but we also had that heat and drought working
against the efforts of a four year old tree.
The remaining varieties on your list will need to be sourced elsewhere - try
Margie, Eric at Siloam ( although he sells trees, not scionwood ), Bree
Eagle or Derry Walsh out west.

John - I am working on a source for Pixie Crunch. ( nothing yet confirmed,
though) Shall I see if I can get two pieces instead of just one? ;-)

Questions

I saved seeds from several red flesh varieties to grow out into seedlings /
graft onto mature tree for faster fruiting / see what kind of apples I get.
Instead of getting tucked safely into the fridge in early December, they
were accidentally stored inside a cupboard and are now bone dry. Can I still
put them into the fridge to stratify, then try and get them to sprout? Or
not bother and waste time? Whadayathink? Tom, this seems to be in your area
of knowledge.

We are going to invest in some drip-lines that can be moved from row to row
throughout the orchard, plus a length that can be left for the season along
the trellis. Any comments or info on the Lee Valley system? Any other
manufacturers that you've heard about?

Cheers to all.
Bizmark.

Good morning and Happy New Year!
I hope everyone had a great holiday season and your gardens and orchards are
surviving the recent weather.
My newly rediscovered abundance of free time has led to some web browsing.
It's fun, but very time addictive. Whilst attempting to locate info on the
De L'estre apple, I stumbled my way into the apples of Versailles. There's
no actual mention to when the varieties on the list actually date to - other
than the reference to the 1680's - but it makes for an interesting read. I'm
intending to take a closer look on the weekend with a big cup of tea in
hand. To shift the topic somewhat, I am heading out into the orchard this weekend
to take advantage of the reduced snow levels, and warmer temps, to gather
scionwood. I have already listed a batch for Margie and the Genebank - (
Margie, I hope your foot is feeling better from the surgery! ), but can
easily snip extra wood for fellow members. Does anyone need anything? We
have been hit hard in the last few weeks by the bloody jackrabbits but the
older trees with higher branches have not been so badly ravaged as the
younger trees. The wildlife guys tell us that the jackrabbits will be bad
for another year or two, or three, since the coyote population is lighter.
Any suggestions on improving the amorous activities of coyotes? Fortunately,
the Plantskydd Spray is still proving to be successful in discouraging the
deer. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it stays that way. DNA Gardens has also grabbed my attention, specifically the Sea buckhorn
(thorn?), honeyberries and shrub cherries. Any advice, experience, or
suggestions? We placed an order last year but managed to fry many of the
plants in the green house by accident. ( We'll certainly remember Bert's
trick with the car polish next year. ) We are working up some ideas on what
to plant along 80 feet of fencing - to act as edible landscaping for birds
and humans, incorporates winter interest (likely some tractor seat
sculptures and shrubs like Harry's Walking stick and coppiced willow) and is
hardy to zone 4 and handles full sun. Anyway, we are going to place another
order soon, and would welcome any feedback. Saskatoons are also on the
potential list.
That's all for this morning. And, since it's the month when the postman
brings neat things to read almost every day - happy plant and seed catalogue
browsing.
Cheers, Bizmark.

Hi Biz,
I have taken to wrapping my trees with fiberglass window screening. Just
wrap it around a few times and tie in place with bailing twine. This way
you get multiple layers of protection, as high as you want, that allows the
tree bark to breathe. Spiral plastic wraps sometimes hold moisture, and
moisture can mean fungus.
Grapes get a cage made of chicken wire. Just place a tomato cage over the
vine when you plant it, then wrap the tomato cage with chicken wire. My
first trellis wire is at the top of the tomato cage and I simply affix the
top of the tomato cage to the trellis wire and it stays upright always.
You can never count on coyotes. I am affiliated with a dog rescue, so if
you want a jack rabbit control dog I will find you one with a high prey
drive. Usually good for rabbits, ground hogs, suirrels, etc (whatever chews
at your patience). My older brother called these pest animals "hot lunch"
for dogs.
Later,
Tom

Tom,
Hot Lunch? Yucky but descriptive!
I think I'll pass on another dog since we already have three. Thanks for
your offer, but my hands are full for the moment. A few visits on the weekend revealed that our place is the only one that's
been hit by the jackrabbits, and none of us have had any deer coming by and
hitting last year's growth. Score one for the Plantskydd, and one for the
hares at Shakerhill. They went along the lowest ties of the espalier like
eating corn on the cob - except for where we'd applied the nasty white paint
with the bitter stuff. The only way to feel calm about their activity is
that we'd planned to hard prune almost all the trees that they'd chomped.
The remaining ones we will replace or return to the nursery for another two
years. Nothing like a mini thaw to get you thinking about spring activities.
Cheers, Bizmark.

Hello Bizmark, I have been catching up a bit on the emails and am pondering
your offer of scionwood. I have some Bud9 rootstock on order and have a
couple of extras for my whimsical moments. If you have spare cuttings of and
of the following, I'd very much appreciate them: Cox's Orange Pippen Macoun
Richelieu
Joe Boles has kindly offered some Seckel Pear scions - but if you also have
them, it would save a bit of trouble.
As for your coyotes, they usually follow a typical predator - prey
relationship. It takes a couple of years for the coyotes to gear up to the
increase in their food supple.
If you have the scions, they may be mailed to me at:
23 Gretman Cres
Thornhill, Ont

Thank you for your consideration.

Hi John,
I can help you out with Macoun, and will check what the Cox's looks like.
The rabbits nailed what little growth went on the Richelieu - check and see
if Margie has anything for Richelieu. Unfortunately, I only have three
pairs, and none are Seckel. Sorry about that.
I'll fire scionwood off to you next week.
Who have you managed to secure Bud 9 from? Traas Rootstock out in BC
retired, so it has been very slim pickings from what I hear. Cheers, Bizmark.

Hello Bizmark,
I have been catching up a bit on the emails and am pondering your offer of
scionwood. I have some Bud9 rootstock on order and have a couple of extras
for my whimsical moments. If you have spare cuttings of and of the
following, I'd very much appreciate them:
Cox's Orange Pippen
Macoun

Thank you for your consideration.

but can
easily snip extra wood for fellow members.
