Good morning and Happy New Year!

I hope everyone had a great holiday season and your gardens and orchards are
surviving the recent weather.

My newly rediscovered abundance of free time has led to some web browsing.
It's fun, but very time addictive. Whilst attempting to locate info on the
De L'estre apple, I stumbled my way into the apples of Versailles. There's
no actual mention to when the varieties on the list actually date to - other
than the reference to the 1680's - but it makes for an interesting read. I'm
intending to take a closer look on the weekend with a big cup of tea in
hand.

To shift the topic somewhat, I am heading out into the orchard this weekend
to take advantage of the reduced snow levels, and warmer temps, to gather
scionwood. I have already listed a batch for Margie and the Genebank - (
Margie, I hope your foot is feeling better from the surgery! ), but can
easily snip extra wood for fellow members. Does anyone need anything? We
have been hit hard in the last few weeks by the bloody jackrabbits but the
older trees with higher branches have not been so badly ravaged as the
younger trees. The wildlife guys tell us that the jackrabbits will be bad
for another year or two, or three, since the coyote population is lighter.
Any suggestions on improving the amorous activities of coyotes? Fortunately,
the Plantskydd Spray is still proving to be successful in discouraging the
deer. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it stays that way.

DNA Gardens has also grabbed my attention, specifically the Sea buckhorn
(thorn?), honeyberries and shrub cherries. Any advice, experience, or
suggestions? We placed an order last year but managed to fry many of the
plants in the green house by accident. ( We'll certainly remember Bert's
trick with the car polish next year. ) We are working up some ideas on what
to plant along 80 feet of fencing - to act as edible landscaping for birds
and humans, incorporates winter interest (likely some tractor seat
sculptures and shrubs like Harry's Walking stick and coppiced willow) and is
hardy to zone 4 and handles full sun. Anyway, we are going to place another
order soon, and would welcome any feedback. Saskatoons are also on the
potential list.

That's all for this morning. And, since it's the month when the postman
brings neat things to read almost every day - happy plant and seed catalogue
browsing.

Cheers, Bizmark.

Hi Biz,

I have taken to wrapping my trees with fiberglass window screening. Just
wrap it around a few times and tie in place with bailing twine. This way
you get multiple layers of protection, as high as you want, that allows the
tree bark to breathe. Spiral plastic wraps sometimes hold moisture, and
moisture can mean fungus.

Grapes get a cage made of chicken wire. Just place a tomato cage over the
vine when you plant it, then wrap the tomato cage with chicken wire. My
first trellis wire is at the top of the tomato cage and I simply affix the
top of the tomato cage to the trellis wire and it stays upright always.

You can never count on coyotes. I am affiliated with a dog rescue, so if
you want a jack rabbit control dog I will find you one with a high prey
drive. Usually good for rabbits, ground hogs, suirrels, etc (whatever chews
at your patience). My older brother called these pest animals "hot lunch"
for dogs.

Later,
Tom

No problem with Ashmead's. Can you send me your mailing address? I have been ruthlessly purging files to clear out clutter and years of stuff lefting lying around.

Tom,

Hot Lunch? Yucky but descriptive!
I think I'll pass on another dog since we already have three. Thanks for
your offer, but my hands are full for the moment.
A few visits on the weekend revealed that our place is the only one that's
been hit by the jackrabbits, and none of us have had any deer coming by and
hitting last year's growth. Score one for the Plantskydd, and one for the
hares at Shakerhill. They went along the lowest ties of the espalier like
eating corn on the cob - except for where we'd applied the nasty white paint
with the bitter stuff. The only way to feel calm about their activity is
that we'd planned to hard prune almost all the trees that they'd chomped.
The remaining ones we will replace or return to the nursery for another two
years.
Nothing like a mini thaw to get you thinking about spring activities.

Cheers, Bizmark.

Hello Bizmark, I have been catching up a bit on the emails and am pondering your offer of scionwood. I have some Bud9 rootstock on order and have a couple of extras for my whimsical moments. If you have spare cuttings of and of the following, I'd very much appreciate them: Cox's Orange Pippen Macoun Richelieu

Joe Boles has kindly offered some Seckel Pear scions - but if you also have them, it would save a bit of trouble.

As for your coyotes, they usually follow a typical predator - prey relationship. It takes a couple of years for the coyotes to gear up to the increase in their food supple.

If you have the scions, they may be mailed to me at:

Thank you for your consideration.

Hi John,

I can help you out with Macoun, and will check what the Cox's looks like.
The rabbits nailed what little growth went on the Richelieu - check and see
if Margie has anything for Richelieu. Unfortunately, I only have three
pairs, and none are Seckel. Sorry about that.

I'll fire scionwood off to you next week.

Who have you managed to secure Bud 9 from? Traas Rootstock out in BC
retired, so it has been very slim pickings from what I hear.

Cheers, Bizmark.
