Hi Tom,
Re: Beefcake - perhaps they provide a little help around the garden?
Now that I've mopped up the tears from laughing, I see that I missed the
reference to determinate plants. But, you could also use this on
indeterminate, as long as they weren't really tall growers like Black Plum
or Snow White. I also think your idea about other veggies is great. I was
going to mix bush beans in with things like cosmos as a form of live mulch,
but hanging peppers or melons from the uprights of the climbing bean
supports would really start to maximize space. Even the smaller size cukes,
like cornichons, might be okay, before they begin to weigh too much. This
vertical gardening not only makes it easier on the back, but you get to
maximize your water use as any spill off gets used by the plants below.
I think some fun stuff is going to happen in the kitchen garden this summer.
Thanks for getting me thinking this way, Tom. If anyone has experience
growing things vertically, I'd love to hear about it
Cheers, Bizmark.

Biz,
"Beefcake"? What kind of tomatoes are those????!!! LOL
I agreee with you that you can be very flexible with what you can use for
holding the grow medium, from plastic grow bags to three gallon pails.
The critical issues would be;
1) correct medium
2) volume of medium (3-5 gallon)
3) strength of pot
4) strength of support
5) determinate tomato plants (bush type)
6) water and feeding
I have also read that a large variety of plants could be grwon in this
manner. My mind jumps to watermellons (Sugar Baby) with no mowing problem
caused by vines and interwoven weeds. Sure, you'd have to support the
fruit in an onion sack, but could it be done? I am sure peppers would
work beautifully if grown upside down.
Later,
Tom
