Hey Bert,
Just returned from the farm and found your email. Sorry to say that I had forgotten my blackberry recharging gizmo and I ran out of power, so I wasn’t connected to the internet for a few days. What bliss. Handling snail mail requests / orders for Mr. Stoll would be just fine with me. There are days when this “wonderful” technology goes on the fritz and tempts me to chuck it through the nearest window. Only, fixing the window would be truly annoying.
I had a few marvelous days in the country. On Sunday we went to check out a neighbour’s new barn. Actually, it’s an old barn that was re-clad, with the help of some Mennonites. Another neighbour, aged 76, dropped by to tell me I had to come back to his farm and gather some scionwood from two trees that are close to dying.. He walked me around his 90 year old orchard, and directed me to one tree, which is where I found decent scionwood for his Northern Spy – but that fruits really, really red. I’ve since found out that there’s actually a sport called Red Spy, but very hard to find. The second tree he wants me to graft from, is a St. Lawrence, but he claims that it is a St. Lawrence that tastes different from the others in the orchard, while looking exactly the same. I wonder if it is, indeed, another sport. He talked about how all the kids knew to eat from this one tree. He also has loads of wild pears, in addition to four ancient and twisted Flemish Beautys. One of his pears produces fruit that is barely 2 ½ inches. Next year I’m going to visit for lots of taste tests, and will acquire budwood if anything has potential. The mini pears sound scrumptious from his description.
Happy Easter to the group, Bizmark.

Hello all Two weeks ago I was contacted by an Amish chap near Aylmer. This religion has no computers, phone or electricity--so all correspondence has to be done by snail mail. I supplied the cuttings and last week he asked for more. Yesterday I rec'd a letter from a Mr. Stoll, near Aylmer, looking for sweet cherries, sour cherries, apples (how about you, Biz) and peaches. Can anyone help with any suggestions of sources where the supplier will handle by snail mail? Thanks in advance Bert
