My sign is ever-increasing stories such as this:

Mom forced to live in car with dogs

On a related note another sign I use to identify a failing economy is to watch my friend's hospitality business go down and down and down some more.  Combine the bad economy with high transportation costs and not as many people are taking vacations away from home.  My friend's business is down 7% from last year and he expects it to get worse.  Everything is costing more money right now.  Heck, yesterday I didn't escape from the grocery store for less than $60, and believe me, I didn't purchase that much food (and I was at Food Lion, not Whole Foods or anything like that).

Ok, sorry for the vent, the economy does seem to suck.  As it relates to how your indicators I've had people cold-call me at my desk selling all kinds of services and products.

There's a bunch of statistics that are tracked to judge the state of the economy, but my own measure is the number of cold calls I get.  As business to business sales volumes drop, the sales teams are left with little to do, and so the number of cold calls goes up dramatically.

My phone's been ringing off the hook lately with you name it--  marketing consultants, offshore development teams, equipment rentals, etc.

How about yours?
