The exception to this is the bar owner and his/her employees.

zman can pack. You and I have to be content with the beer.

Interesting thing about NC law, he'd also have an easy time of getting
approval to keep a machine gun behind the bar (assuming he already had
his federal approval).

Open carry is similarly forbidden in such a place. Open carry follows
almost all of the concealed carry restrictions except the one about
financial institutions (if it's not posted NO GUNS, you can go into a
bank with a gun on your hip in plain sight but not concealed).

The list of no-no places is a real mess that needs to be cleaned up.
