well, i reckon my backlinks and ratings just went to @#$% in a hand basket when i broke all my links by changing *.html to *.shtml for server side includes.  oh, well.

There is more to it than that. A site built in 1999 that received 10
backlinks in the year 1999 is given a bigger boost than a site built in 2005
that received 10 backlinks in 2005.  There is a heavy dampening effect
levied on sites whose backlinks are relatively new.
