Thanks for the tip to the newbie. I'll check it out.

Question: This machine originally shipped with OS 9 so the low-level
hardware diagnostic that came with it would be useless right?

I'll try the other tool.

Did you try running a hardware diagnostic? My macs have always come with a
low-level hardware diagnostic from Apple, and then I also use TechTool Pro
4, which will run a series of hardware diagnostics on any OS X computer. Its
good for finding disk surface problems, which the Apple diagnostic doesn't
cover.
