Jane Smiley had an essay in Slate about the "unteachable ignorance" of the red states that illustrates exactly what you're talking about. If she wants to know why the democrats lost, she should take a look in the mirror.

Who knew that being ignorant and being told what to do are the only options? Does that mean democrats are better because they like being told what to do?
