No, actually it is not extreme at all. Society places restrictions on
people all the time because of their position.

News people and organizations are in a position to shape public opinion and
enjoy levels of access and opportunity that average citizens do not. In
many cases they serve as the only eyes and ears of the citizenry. Because
of this, they have a responsibility and duty to be fair and accurate in
their reporting, an obligation to avoid the appearance of bias, and
generally should avoid the appearance of impropriety. Journalists are
taught this at every school of journalism I've ever heard of, and the one I
took classes at. I can also tell you that it was taken very seriously at
the newspaper I worked for.

Dan Rather appearing at a political rally where his name, reputation and
fame aided the fund raising of democratic party was an unforgivable breach.
He should have been fired. No question at all.
